Our Spirit

Sakura-la-an integrates the spirit of tea ceremony (chanoyu) into its hostel management. Our staff are enthusiasts and practitioners of tea ceremony. We grow plants on our terrace and decorate the rooms with wildflowers from the terrace garden. We have plans to join a shared ownership system for a tea farm and look forward to serving you matcha green tea made from our own tea leaves. (We promise you that our hostel has a lot to offer even if you are not particularly interested in the tea ceremony.)

Tenjinbashi-suji Shopping Street

Tenjinbashi-suji Shopping Street is the longest arcade in Japan, stretching about 2.6 kms from 1-chome (block) to 10-chome. With its covered arcade, Tenjinbashi offers you a cultural and culinary adventure, rain or shine. Osaka Tenmangu Shrine (大阪天満宮) in 2-chome is home to Osaka's biggest summer festival, the Tenjin Matsuri. A famous 10th century scholar and politician, Sugawara Michizane, is enshrined here as the god of scholarship. Located right by the shrine is the Hanjo-tei (繁昌亭) Theater, where rakugo ¬– traditional comic storytelling – is performed. This is also the right place to experience Osaka’s food culture. Walk along and try some street food – there’s korokke (croquette), warabi-mochi (traditional sweets), taiyaki (fish-shaped pancake filled with bean paste), takoyaki (fried dumplings with diced octopus), and kara-age (fried chicken). Tenjinbashi 4-chome, the area around JR Tenmangu station, has many sushi restaurants, among them the well-known Harukoma (春駒). The streets are packed with izakaya stalls (traditional pubs) and also boast an interesting variety of restaurants. Anything goes – if you drink, you can either go bar hopping or discover a cozy place to savor a glass or two of wine. A must-see in Tenjinbashi 6-chome is the Osaka Museum of Housing and Living, with displays showing what Osaka life was like in the past. Coming out of Tenjinbashi 8-chome is the Naniwanoyu (なにわの湯) spa complex. This “super” sento (public bathhouse) features many types of baths. Try its rooftop open-air baths and soak in an onsen (natural hot spring) in the middle of the bustling city. A long stroll down Tenjinbashi-suji arcade will be your best introduction to Osaka and its charms.
